Two community events are being held at the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter next week and both are open to the public and free to attend.
On Saturday, March 7, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., the animal shelter, in collaboration with Papa John’s Pizza of Hampton Roads, is hosting an on-site, family friendly adoption event. “Pizza and Pets” will feature Papa John’s pizza for purchase along with dogs, cats and pocket pets looking for their forever home. Casey Subaru in Newport News, another generous supporter of the animal shelter, will sponsor the first 20 adoptions of the day by paying for the adoption fees. Papa John’s sponsored race car and race team will also be at “Pizza and Pets” as will a variety of vendors and other animal rescues from across the Hampton Roads area. Those interested can follow the Pizza and Pets Facebook event for more details.
The next day, Newport News Animal Services Division is partnering with the Virginia Department of Health to offer a free drive-through rabies vaccination clinic at the animal shelter. On Sunday, March 8, from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., citizens can bring their dogs and cats to the animal shelter to receive the vaccination for free. No appointment is necessary, and the clinic is open to everyone. Vaccines will be available while supplies last.
All dogs and cats must be on a leash or in an animal carrier and must be 12 weeks or older to receive the vaccine. Owners should bring proof of the pet’s current rabies vaccination if requesting a three year booster; otherwise, pets will receive the one year vaccination. Newport News residents can purchase 2020 animal licenses at the clinic, and owners must bring proof of sterilization if purchasing a license for a spayed or neutered pet. Materials on how to prepare pets for disasters and other emergencies will also be available along with other pet resources.
The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter, a collaborative venture operated by the city of Newport News but also serving Hampton, Poquoson and York County, is located at 5843 Jefferson Avenue in Newport News.
