Employees may elect Short-Term Disability (STD) for a 50% base annual salary replacement in the event of a disability. STD begins after a waiting period of 30 consecutive days once all accumulated sick leave has been exhausted.
Short-term benefits are paid up through 90 consecutive days. If an employee enrolls in November, then the effective date would be January 1. November is also the only month in which an employee has the option to enroll or cancel this benefit.
Under Long-Term Disability (LTD), the city covers at no cost to all employees 40% of their base annual salary. The employee has the option to purchase a 10% buy-up. Long-term benefits will take effect after a waiting period of 90 consecutive days from your date of disability if all accumulated sick leave has been exhausted.
Benefits for Long-Term Disability will end at age 65 or when the person is able to return to work. The only time to enroll or cancel is during the month of November each year for an effective date of January 1.
Reminder: For both short and long-term disability, when the benefit is paid, it does not retro back to the date of disability.
