Human Services knows the importance of using the best practice methods and programs that have proven successful in supporting families. Healthy Families America and Parents as Teachers are both nationally recognized home visiting models that aim to prevent child abuse and neglect and help children enter school ready to learn. These quality early childhood programs are available free to Newport News residents. Families can decide if they would like to participate - the programs are completely voluntary. Screening and assessment services will help you to select the program that works best for you and your family.
Parents participating in home visiting services will learn more about child development, child health and nutrition, and parenting practices. They will also receive emotional support and guidance, connections to community resources, and help with transportation. Parents will learn and do hands-on activities with their children that will encourage social and emotional growth and development. Services include information and resources for the child or children, mother, father, and significant others that may live in the household.
