The Standard- Short/Long Term Disability (NNERF, VRS 1 & 2)

Effective January 1, 2021, the city will transition to one short and long term disability carrier, The Standard Insurance Company.  VRS Hybrid employees, who are not in their first year of employment, are currently enrolled in a comparable Virginia Local Disability Plan (VLDP) with coverage provided by The Standard. 

With the transition, coverage for NNERF, VRS Plan 1 and Plan 2 employees to The Standard will offer improved benefit terms as well as enhanced customer service.  Program highlights include:

  • Telephonic Intake Customer Service Center
  • STD Waiting Period reduced from 30 days to 14 days (PML must still be exhausted prior to benefit coverage start)
  • STD Coverage increased from 50% to 60% of base pay
  • City-paid Core 40% LTD Benefit, 10% Buy-up Option still offered
  • Absence Management services FMLA & Disability Claims
