Selection Process Steps

Make sure to follow these important steps required to complete your application.

  1. Complete a job application.
  2. Must take the written entrance exam being administered on June 17th, 18th, and 19th at 1 PM. You will only attend one day and time. You do not need to register for the exam. The exam will be administered at Newport News Fire Training located at 17300 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23603. You will be given your interview date/time after completion of your exam. You are required to submit the NNFD candidate background information packet and any supporting documentation (i.e. driving record, DD214, etc.) at the time of your entrance exam.
  3. After obtaining employment, candidates will be required to complete and successfully pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) which will be administered prior to training.

Applicants & Eligibility

It is clear that the Firefighter/Medic Recruit selection process is very structured and requires the applicant to cooperate in meeting scheduled appointments. Upon completion of this multi-phased process, applicants may be placed in a pool of eligible applicants from which conditional job offers may be made.

It is likely that not all of the candidates in the eligibility pool will be offered a position with NNFD. The number of positions offered depends upon the department's needs and the number of openings available.

The eligibility pool will remain active for one year from the date of establishment. Candidates must reapply for each new process if they wish to continue seeking a Firefighter/Medic Recruit position.

Don't Forget…

Candidates will need to provide the following items if scheduled for an interview:

  • Current certified DMV record
  • Copies of high school diploma or GED (or college diploma / transcripts)
  • If applicable, a copy of your military service DD-214
  • If applicable, a copy of any current Fire or EMS certifications

Remember…

  • You must complete each step of the hiring process.
  • You are subject to a comprehensive background check.
  • You must complete a medical evaluation and pre-employment substance abuse test.
  • You must have the following vaccinations prior to hire: Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR), Varicella, the current season's flu shot and Tdap.
